The Akhal Teke is an ancient breed from Turkmenistan. It was used for
generations as a war horse, fast and hardy, able to go long distances
with little food or water. Today in Turkmenistan it is used as a race
horse. The Akhal Teke is an endangered breed, with perhaps 300 in the
US and 500 in Europe. The majority of Akhal Teke are in Turkmenistan and
Russia.
In America, Akhal Teke compete and excel in 3 day eventing, endurance
riding and grand prix dressage. Characteristics are a narrow horse with
long neck and back, and usually an iridescent coat. They stand between
15 to 16 hands tall, and are known to steal your heart.
