Why buy from us...
At Sweet Water Farm, we believe nature builds the best athletes. Our horses are prepared for the sport world from birth. Rather than locking them up and feeding a grain-based diet, we turn them out and allow them to graze as much as they want. Our horses live in the most natural environment we can provide: they are on pasture year-round, and live in herds with a variety of playmates of all ages. Having around-the-clock access to as much galloping room as they need means that our youngsters have the benefit of constant movement which builds strong bones, strong lungs, and an athletic physique. No matter what you feed them...a stall-raised horse will never develop as well as a pastured one. Additionally, we follow classical principles by allowing youngsters their childhoods. We start riding horses at age four, rather than age two. By the time they are ready for a rider, they have already had four years of their own natural conditioning, as well as natural horsemanship groundwork, and are physically capable to carry weight without damage to their spines and joints. We maintain their hooves with natural-balance barefoot trims, and we take pride in having horses with healthy feet year-round, despite our wet climate. We even keep our eventing horses barefoot, and they are happily sound and currently competing at Training Level without shoes.
In addition to their physical development, we focus on developing horses' minds. After all, no matter how fancy it looks, you haven't got a partner unless your horse is safe to ride, too. From the moment they are born, our foals are handled from head to toe--and not just by the same person, but by various children, adults, and even the family dogs! We use Natural Horsemanship as part of our foundation training, and we feel this builds a platform of confidence and obedience that lasts a life-time.
We also believe that the environment a horse grows up in can be a crucial factor for raising sport-horses that perform well in the often-stressful world of competition. Sweet Water Akhal-Tekes grow up on a busy farm. They live side-by-side with cows, chickens, cats, dogs, and rabbits. Having a saw-mill running next to the barn on a daily basis means they are comfortable with loud noise, crashing boards, and fork-lifts carrying huge loads of wood high above their heads. Our neighbor owns a helicopter...so the horses get used to it taking off and landing--literally--right next door. In addition to all this are Sam Ibold & friends' dirt-biking extravaganzas, shooting practice at the near-by gravel pit, chain-saws, air compressors, and traffic on West Valley RD. If a horse can get confident with all this...nothing is going to phase him!
Whether you are an amateur rider looking for the horse of your dreams, or a seasoned competitor looking for an athlete to take you to the top, you can be confident that our horses have what it takes--mentally, emotionally, and physically. Our breeding program focuses on producing healthy and athletic purebred Akhal-Teke sport-horses for endurance, dressage, eventing, and jumping, as well as pleasure riding, trail riding, and breeding.
