About us:
We moved to the island in 1999 after we sold our motorcycle shop in Seattle called Doctor K.
Amrita manages the farm and horses, Jay runs his sawmill business and timberframe construction and our son Sam runs his business Steadfast Diving LLC.

About the farm:

Picture
Our farm is on an island called San Juan. It is in a group of about 350 islands called the San Juan's Islands, located off the Northwest coast of Washington state. Some islands are tiny, and some are big... we live on the 2nd largest island (about 55 square miles). Although the Pacific Northwest is known for it's mild, wet winters, the San Juans are in a region known as the "Banana Belt", a rain shadow created by the Olympic mountains. We get about half the annual rainfall as our neighbors in Seattle. The San Juans are famous for our resident Orca whales, also called killler whales, who live here year round.

Our farm has a well, and unlike many of our neighbors, our water does not have the sulfur taste... hence our name ''Sweet Water Farm''.

How to get here:

Picture
Since we live on an island, we have to take the ferry to go to the mainland.
See http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/
But the most exciting way to get here is by small airplane or seaplane with Kenmore Air: http://www.kenmoreair.com/

How do the horses cope with traveling on the ferry?
Well, when we are lucky to be parked in the front of the boat, they enjoy the view. Otherwise, they happily munch their hay, as if in a stall. While waiting in line for the ferry to depart, they are a big tourist attraction, and get lots of treats.

San Juan Mobile Sawmill

My husband operates a mobile sawmill.

You can see his work here:

Besides milling and building timberframes, we both like to garden and grow most of our food.
